about

This is the first song with words I ever wrote for accordion, just a few years ago. Or the accordion wrote it at my first ever gig when I suddenly launched into the main theme between songs in my set list. This is from a performance at Luna's Cafe in Sacramento, April 6th, 2012.

lyrics

A Coin for the Fortune Teller by Julie the Bruce

You can take the word of the fortune teller
she will tell you what you want to hear
as you take out coins to pay her
your fortune calls her name

what did you ask the fortune teller
What did you decide to pay her
Did she read the cards to you
or look in the crystal ball

She asks you a few questions
looks at your crystal ball reflection
as your life unfolds before her
she laughs and jingles coins in her hand

A coin for the dreams of the suffering
a coin for the dreams of joy
a coin for the dreams of the wanton, virgin, sinner, and more
a coin for those in joy, a coin for the suffering
a coin boy, for all things in between

a coin for the fortune teller,
tell her all your dreams
tell her all your fears and schemes
she knows so much about these things

a coin for your future joy
a coin for your future, boy
spare a coin for the fortune teller
tell her everything

What did you ask the fortune teller
did you ask her who you'd marry
did you ask her when you'd die or when you'd make it big
She asks you a few questions
looks at your crystal ball reflection
as your life unfolds before her she laughs
and jingles coins in her hand

A coin for the dreams of the suffering
a coin for the dreams of joy
a coin for the dreams of the wanton, virgin, sinner, and more
a coin for those in joy, a coin for the suffering
a coin boy, for all things in between

a coin for the fortune teller,
tell her all your dreams
tell her all your fears and schemes
she knows so much about these things

a coin for your future joy
a coin for your future, boy
spare a coin for the fortune teller
tell her everything

Give all that you can boy, she knows if you spare a coin
she knows your fortune well, your fortune will be told in hell

As you leave the carnival, the wheels do turn, the clowns do smile, and with those words
inside your head, you'll remember them until you're dead
your whole life will center in on those words the fortune teller said
when you look into the mirror you'll remember your reflection
in her crystal ball of lies
where your dream began to die
dreams that you had put aside
all those dreams you forgot
the fire eaters burned them up the elephants they trampled them
the carousel made them spin knife throwers wheel began to turn
fortune or torment begin here
and they're words you paid to hear
so tip the fortune teller well
your true fortune is told in hell
